    Favorite books on the outdoors

What's your favorite book about being outdoors? I am always looking for recommendations.

When I'm not outside I tend to read about it. Fiction, non-fiction, instruction, etc.

A few I have enjoyed are: AWOL on the Appalachian trail, Wild, A Walk in the Woods, Guide to the Superior Hiking Trail, Into the Wild, Into Thin Air, Call of the Wild, White Fang, the Lost City of Z, the Backpackers Field Manual, the Ultimate Hang.

    I love this book: https://www.amazon.com/Born-Run-Hidd.../dp/0307279189

Born to Run: A Hidden Tribe, Superathletes, and the Greatest Race the World Has Never Seen by Christopher McDougall

Thought the 26.2 miles of a traditional marathon was difficult? Apparently there are extreme marathoners who run marathons totaling more than 100 miles! Christopher McDougall goes into the "underground" world of ultra marathoners and tribes in Africa that hunt via persistence hunting, the worlds oldest hunting method. It involves simply chasing down prey for miles and miles and miles until the prey flat out tires before the hunter does. The author goes on to make an argument using empirical data and physiological evidence that the human body was quite literally born to run. I thought this book so so interesting I couldn't put it down and I recommend it to anymore who even remotely has in interest in running, working out or the outdoors.

    Steve

I really enjoyed River of Doubt by Candice Millard. It covers a fairly ill-fated exploration by Teddy Roosevelt, post-presidency, of an unmapped tributary of the Amazon. It's a pretty crazy outdoor adventure, non-fiction, and historic which ticks a lot of boxes for me.

I have read Hikertrash by Erin Miller which was pretty good. She wrote it as a day-by-day account of their hike along the PCT.

Right now I'm reading The Last Englishman by Keith Foskett. This is pretty good as well and doesn't follow the day-by-day account as closely but he is truly an Englishman that came to the US just to thru-hike the PCT.

Hikertrash was a good one. I like "Naked in the Stream" by Vic Forester. It has great stories about Isle Royale. FYI, don't be surprised if this thread disappears or gets moved to the DM section...

What section? Sorry if I put this in the wrong place. I didn't see an obvious location but felt like asking...

If you like "The lost city of Z "then you should like " The lost city of the monkey God". I enjoyed "Just Passin' thru"
And " Bear in the backseat, adventures of a wildlife ranger ".

I liked "127 Hours", the story of Aaron Ralston. I also like Bill Mason's "Path of the Paddle" and "Song of the Paddle".

Thomas McGuane "The Longest Silence", Jim Harrison "The River Swimmer", several books by John Gierach. That's a good start.
