we got the 1000 a few years back- use it more for summer time-to calc the THI and tell the guys when it is too hot to go out on the field- used it more in PA for the Pennsic war than here in TX. 'too hot' is not a concept our guys really relate to.

I have a Brunton ADC that I normally use. It measures min/max temp and gives you a read-out by hour. The hourly read-out is interesting, and I always check it in the morning just to see what temps looked like while I slept...but not really useful for anything. And the wind speed has never been accurate how I use it...I just hang it from my hammock support, so the whole unit spins in the breeze. Still, if you hold it still then it'll give you the wind chill. Pretty good unit...paid about $80, IIRC. Problem is that the battery is in the unit (i.e. no probe) so in really cold weather the battery life suffers.

Since I'm in the middle of a move and the Brunton is packed away, I bought a $12 job at Walmart that records min/max and humidity...and it has a probe. There's a picture of it here: http://www.tothewoods.net/HikingPict...partRange.html. This way I can sleep with the unit to keep the battery warm, and to check it when I wake up at night w/o reaching out of the hammock, but the probe is outside of my tarp. And the unit displays the temp inside my quilt as well as outside. Just be careful not to put too much pressure on the cable if you're sleeping with it...it's pretty easy to pull out (don't ask how I know). I'm thinking about sewing a DWR panel inside my top quilt over my chest just to hold the thermometer!

I just ordered one of These but they sent the wrong one so I am still waiting to get it, but it says it has indoor and out door via a cord that meausre 9 foot 12 inches 10 foot I guess hoping I can stretch that to my tarp ridge and hang the unit off the ridge line in the hammock.

But hey for $14.00 it's not a big deal if it sucks I guess.

Exactly what I was thinking of. Someone has a photo in the gallery of one from a different company, but the same functions.

Mine looks just like the yellow one in Hawk-eye's post, by Coghlans, cheap but keeps time and has max/min temperature function. It either hangs from my shoulder strap or from the ridgeline of my hammock. Yes, my body heat alters the reading a bit but I can always hike along with my hand stuck out for a few minutes. I have it looped on a piece of the same stuff I use for tarp tieouts.

Yah I was thinking it might be a handy function, along with the temps.

Not sure about them in general, they sent me the wrong one cause they had almost the same item number as one of the others, when I called them they said "o yah thats a misprint on the site" So they packed the wrong one because they did not know which one was ordered Kind of reminds me of a joke a guy I used to work with would do about a guy getting his $#@% together, he would stand there patting his hands together like making a snow ball.
