    1st night in new hammock

My son and I are staying out tonight in our new ENO hammocks. We are expecting a low of 4 deg F. tonight. I have slept at -30deg F on the ground, this will be the first time trying to use a hammock. I will let all know the results tomorrow.

I am going with 2 thick wool blankets overtop of a ccf pad. and I am using a - 40 bag. My son is using a homemade under quilt and his winter bag. We will both be dressed in warmer clothes as well.

What a great thing to do with your son!

Sounds like you are well prepared.

We had a combination of success and failure. We had no problems with the cold, we were quite warm in our bags. My son slept great. I on the other hand ended up waking up after 4 hours and just laying there wide awake. The problem for me was that I was too hot in the mummy bag and combined with the tightness of the bag and being hot, I had to bug out. I know that I could have stripped off layers and climbed back in and been fine.

The final temp was 6deg F with a wind chill of 1deg F. We were very happy with the comfort level of the hammocks, just need to do a little adjustment on the layers of clothes and the mummy bag.

I will be hanging again next week in northern NY. Should be a fun weekend.

If your mummy bag has a full length zipper, try just unzipping it and using it like a quilt next time. Makes it very easy to take care of that thermal regulation without having to futz with removing or adding layers in the middle of the night.

That is usually what I do when I sleep on the ground. I was a little worried about being cold. Next time I will try it that way. Thanks for the advise.
