Wookie style underquilt vs insulated hammock

My buddy recently got a wookie underquilt. I really like how it conforms to his lay to eliminate cold spots. I was thinking I'd try making one for my first down project, but it got me wondering about all that extra fabric. I have a 8 oz robic hammock I'm quite pleased with, the fabric in a wookie will outweigh my hammock without counting the down...

I know the idea of an insulated hammock is not new. Do people generally like them or not? The cons for a insulated hammock seem like they'd also be cons for a wookie (lay position and all). And if you have a summer/winter quilt, why not just have a summer/winter hammock since all the money is in the down anyway?

The draw back to having the insulation sew to the hammock is - you can't change the under quit for each season and it would be very hard to wash the under quilt attached to the hammock. I guess you could have a hammock per season though.

Two drawbacks I can think of

    1) the hammock would need to be made from a "down proof" fabric, limiting the selection. Is there any breathability concerns with calendered fabric?

    2) there will be thread seams for the baffles against your body, potentially uncomfortable.

Does anybody have experience with these points?

If doing an insulated hammock, you'd want to do an extra inner hammock layer to avoid laying directly on the baffle stitching like Bonefire does

You would absolutely damage the baffle line stitching if you laid directly on it.

I hadn't thought of that one, thanks. That alone probably pushes me over the edge to making a separate underquilt

To the OP, the pros of both the Wookie and an insulated hammock like the Bonefire Whisper is that the "UQ" can weigh less due to the lack of suspension lines (the fabric usually weighs less) and the lack of superfluous insulation based on directional lay.
The potential cons are reduction of flexibility in temperature and directional lay. Of course layering up UQs can resolve the lower temps, but the higher temps venting from the top instead of the bottom, but the lay doesn't change.

Excellent point that many miss. Thank you for bringing this up.
