    First hammock hang trip GSMNP

Heading into GSMNP for a two night trip today. This will be my first time in the hammock. Looks like low 20's, should be an adventure. Gonna be sleeping with a 12 deg down bag and my neoair pad. I will post pics and more when I get back.

May be your last time in a hammock when you get hit with that big fine. Can't hang in GSMNP.

I think you can, just not on the AT section through the park. Campsites not on the AT are hangable.

That's utterly false, not sure where you heard that. With the exception of the AT shelters, GSMNP is hammock heaven.

I did not receive a fine, but when researching an AT thru, we found that through much of the Smokies some sites are shelter only and stealth camping is strictly prohibited. With a $500 or more fine fairly well enforced. There are tent sites near many shelters but unless there is an emergency situation setting up camp is forbidden outside of established sites. Maybe it's only along the AT, but I figured it would be across the board. Excuse me for trying to give someone a heads up that may not have know.

Nobody is incorrect here. It's the context that makes the difference, and Goat was simply trying to be helpful, as were all others. Hikers must use shelters. Shelter reservations are required in GSMNP. If the shelters are full of people having permits, then 'tenting' is allowed. (I assume that extends to hammocks) One can obtain a thru-hiker permit, also. Thru hikers can use the shelters, but must yield to those with permits. So, if non-reserved space is available in a shelter, or space is available in the shelter, then you must stay in the shelter. If space is not available, it is permissible to camp outside.

You can hang at any site that doesn't have a shelter. If there is a shelter, you must stay in it.

Just man up and admit you made an incorrect assumption.

No, incorrect information was posted as fact. It was not maliciously done but it was incorrect.
