    Hello from Lower Alabama

I'm completely new to all this. I am on a quest to gear up for hiking and while I was looking for a pack/tent/bag/etc. someone mentioned hanging to me. I found the concept intriguing and have been looking around for more info and have found a wealth of it here.

So, here I am. I have never hung before and I don't personally know anyone who has. I would like to give it a try, but am still trying to find the best point of entry. I have looked at the Hennecy's and Warbonnet's online (if I buy one you guys have just about sold me on the blackbird), but the price tag is a bit high for a guy who has no idea if he is even going to like it. I have also thought about the DIY option, but I have never tried sewing and would have to start from scratch there too.

In any case, I'm here and I look forward to learning more from you folks.

    Chris

EDIT: Oops, forgot to tell you a little about me.

I live in Bay Minette Alabama. I have a 2 yr old little boy and the most amazing wife in the world. I work in IT as the Software Development Manager for Baldwin County. I love the outdoors and have done some camping in the past, but just got started with hiking last year. Besides doing this for the pure enjoyment, I am hoping for hiking/camping to be something that I can do with my little boy as he grows.

Hey, Cyokly, glad you found us... if I were staring out, I would buy an Eno Doublenest, thus saving my money for insulation.

Or, I would buy 3 yards of lightweight nylon, hem the edges, make channels in the ends and install whoopie slings! It's that easy, and it's all here!

Welcome, I used to spent a lot of time in Lilian where my parents lived. I really enjoyed that area. Baldwin county is beautiful. Once you get used to the comforts and conveniences of hanging, you will really enjoy and appreciate it. Especially on those warm balmy nights down your way.

Welcome to the forum. There's allot of help here for DIY but if you decide for some reason that its more than you can do at this time and you want to buy instead, keep one thing in mind. When Blackbird's come up for sale here on the forum their generally sold within hours so its less of a risk than you think.

Welcome Cyokly. I grew up over in Covington county just a little west of you and spent a lot of time over on Magnolia Springs and Foley. You will find a wealth of info here on HF.

You might do a Google search for a Travel Light. I picked up three a while back on sale for $19 each and the model with netting for $39.

Happy Hanging with your son. It will be special.
