Under Quilt Question

I just got a HH Hyperlite. I am thinking about using for my AT thru in 2011 starting mid march and heading north.

Any suggestions on what under quilt I should look to get.

I really like the Perfect trees crowsnest. It is a little bigger for a 2/3 UQ but it won't block you bottom entry. You will and the small footpad for sitting or even laying on at times. The JRB nest is also excellent and is a time tested classic.

thats a steal for a JRB quilt....and there made for the HH

Other than that would say talk to Stormcrow...the maker of the crowsnest he is a member here...
he does custom work as well..i'm sure he coud make you anything you want at a good price

+1 on the JRB Nest recommendation. The Nest has a slit to match the HH entry but in practice you don't really need to use it. You can enter and exit just by pulling the Nest off to one side. Also, since the Nest is a full length UQ, you don't need to use a sit pad or anything else under your legs to stay warm. Different strokes for different folks.

Since I'm not a fan of the bottom entry, I'd say send it to 2Q/ZQ for the zipper mods and then hit up a Warbonnet for a 3 season Yeti.

+1 for Perfect Trees. I just got my winter ptarmigan in the mail a couple of days ago and love it. I was laying in it yesterday in 30 degree weather, no TQ and I was toasty warm from the buttom. Stormcrow is a great guy, really helpful and has excellent customer service.

Let's resurrect this thread...

After setting up the Hyperlight and Supershelter in the back woods , I came back to the house to thaw out my fingers. I've used this setup before and have been satisfied with how well it works, but I can only imagine how difficult it would be to adjust the SS in freezing temperatures without a warm house for refuge.

So, despite the fact that the SS works, I'm looking at something that will work as well, but is much easier to adjust. Will the JRB Nest meet those requirements? Does anyone in the northern States have a preference for the Winter Nest versus the original? Is there a video of someone setting up the JRB Nest?

I am in Southern Ontario (42^N). I own a Nest & Winter Nest (and Old Rag Mountain for a TQ). The build quality on both Nests is excellent. I would use the WN for 9-10 months out of the year. June-July-August can get unbearably hot/humid here. In my opinion, if you could only get one quilt, I'd go for the Winter Nest, the extra protection it offers allows for more leeway in the areas/nights that you can hang.

OTOH, $200 for the Nest in the For Sale section is a darn good price.

You don't need a video to setup the UQ. If you have any specific questions I'll be glad to help you.

Thanks, Rug. I'll do the Winter Nest then, but I'll have to delay the purchase until this fall. The extra cash will have to go towards a house across the river from you.
