Tree Huggers and garda hitch for Tarp

I wanted to share my latest little project. for me its a faster way to put up my speer winter tarp.
it takes just a few things to make.
    here is the list:
    1. 1/2 in. wide strap, (i got some from strapworks 40 ft. for around 8 bucks). Just judge the size of your normal trees and make your tree huggers accordingly. Im using about 6 ft per tree hugger.
    2. 4 welded rings, smallest ones I could find at ace hardware store. $.80 each. (2 per tree hugger). they are smooth and round.
    3. 2 cheap (not for climbing) carebiners. (small ones)

I used about 6 feet of 1/2 inch strap. Sewed a loop with two small rings in one end, and sewed a loop for a carabiner in the other. this way I can wrap the tree hugger around the tree and clip the biner. On the other end of the tree hugger is where I connect the ridge line for my tarp. I use a garda hitch in the two rings. so, the process of putting up my tarp is, wrap snap, wrap snap, pull(then a quick stopper knot). and then I tie out my corners.

Im not afraid to admit it, I like hugging trees.

I have a tarp rigged in a similar manner. I used 3/4" stainless steel rings, because I couldn't stand the idea of cheap, plated, hardware store rings in my kit, and because at least one member had a problem with oxidation damaging his hammock.

Also, I use a toggle, instead of a biner, at the tree. When rigged tight, a ring buckle can be difficult to release...the toggle solves that problem.

good to know, where do you get the 3/4" stainless rings?

im using the thin bright orange speer guidelines, and it seems I have to put a stopper knot to keep the ridge line from slipping. so getting them loose seems to be a breeze. I suspect if the rings get a bit of rain and oxidation, that will change as they gain grip on the chord.

    hey, thanx oldgringo.
I got some of those rings from reefscuba.com.--- I like (voice of Borat).
I also got some dynaglide, and now I have redesigned my last redesign again(its a never ending process).

1st tree hugger - marlinspike and toggle.
ridgeline connects with a bowline loop.
2nd tree hugger - rings and garda hitch.
I also changed to full length ridge line using dynaglide.
I found my SWT was getting saggy in a snowing (more of a slushing in the northern part of southern california), so I set up the dynaglide underneath for support.

now to loosen it up, just pull the toggle out.

    Great set-up!
I was looking at the Polyester Webbing 1/2" from Strapworks, too. Do you know breaking strength?

Whatever it is, you're not going to come anywhere close to breaking it hanging a tarp.

    oldgringo:

I was thinking about a hammock, instead of a tarp. My only concern would be damage to the tree due the narrow width with the addition weight of the hammock. I assume the traditional 1" webbing distributes the weight/pressure over a larger surface, than 1/2". Maybe I just answer my own question ...

    not sure.
might be able to find out from strapworks.

it would be nice to cut the weight in half of 1" straps, but if you want to go lightweight on hammock suspension, whoopieslings are the ticket. I like the idea of going easy on the trees, so I came up with this set up for the tarp.
