What if the tree is too wide to have the straps looped more than once, but one time is obviously a little too long? This has happened to me (I use tree straps that have loops in both ends, I loop the strap through itself and a carabiner on the other loop and attach my whoopies to the carabiner). Do I need to find a different width tree, or one a little further away?

You could use a marlin spike hitch on your straps to set the anchor point anyway along the strap. Remember to attach the whoopie to the knot and not the spike.

Yeah, the picture shows how I configure my straps. Of course, the clip in the photo is where my sewn loop would be. I try to have as little bend as possible in the strap as it's going to the hammock so there is less stress put on the strap and the sewn loop.

Gotcha Goat...Did not realize that because I just use the loop. I'm a crane operator and rigger so it comes naturally to do it the way I do it everyday. Thanks for the correction, just watched his instructional video.

I just watched Shug's video on this... seems reasonable, like a knot I could actually tie! Thanks.

Directional Figure of 8 loop anywhere along a cord or strap is a secure option. Used by S&R folks. Marlinspike is fine, but no marlinspike is ever needed, nor care and concern ever about resting whoopie only on a knot rather than the spike. And of course, you can use a biner hooked onto the hammock continuous loop. I use only 15 foot Kevlar straps with loop on one end for tree wrap end and there is often much left over; so use a Beckett hitch with the webbing to the biner, which is clipped to the hammock continuous loop. Easy peasey and lessens any CL amsteel stickiness and abrasion that you can get with webbing directly around the CL. On the other hand, can eliminate the biner also and just replace CLs from time to time. I make my own any length I want from 1/8" amsteel and no splicing: join ends with triple fisherman's knot. Only takes a minute to make one. Toss them when they get worn.
