I've been calling around, as well. It seems that most of these places just have them drop shipped. It's the shipping that drives the price up. Most places sell the stand for $99.00, but then there is the $39-$-59 shipping charge.
I finally found one near my home town in VT and will be picking it up this Saturday. It was $119 instead of $99 but I don't have to pay any shipping.

    Good luck with your hunt.

    2 questions

    Regarding these stands:
    1. Is there an issue with lightning since the stand is metal?

    2. Is the height high enough for the bottom entry of a HH?

I would like to use a stand for car camping at musical festivals with my HH.

That hammock rocker looks like a good deal...but why is she holding a rope? Ahh...nevermind.

I have the Vario stand - I'm satisfied with it. Most stands w/o a rigid top piece will flex when you get in it...that's why a weight (milk jug) is handy for keeping the tarp taut.

I doubt there's enough metal to make a difference for lightning unless you're in the middle of an open field. The stand isn't taller than a car or a small tree so you're not likely to be the tallest thing around, either.

I've used my HH on it several times...no problem with the height.

    Hey Jeff,
Did you need to buy the extender or is the "standard" stand long enough?

That is the one I have too. Correct me if I'm wrong, but the standard goes to 14'. That is plently long enough for a hh.

EDIT: It acutally only goes to 12'.

Really? That's cool...I thought the extension bar was necessary over 12'. I'll definitely be getting one now!

I went back and I got the Byer of Maine Vario Hammock Stand from ****'s Sporting Goods. I paid $123.99 after shipping. I used a $10 off for opening a Google checkout account coupon.

The product number has changed, but the name and pic looks the same. Mine has an extension bar that is not shown that runs inbetween the 2 supports. Take it for what it's worth, but I think this is the same one that I have.

But yeah you guys are right, it only goes to 12' long. Still long enough for me.

I don't use the extension and have never had a problem with length.

I'm surprised no one has made one of these yet. With all of the DIYers on this site, is everyone afraid to bend some steel? Wouldn't take any welding. Just set up a jig to bend the tubing, then get some u-bolts and attach it to the bottom legs and you are done. Put an eye bolt in the top of each upright for hanging. Actually, this would probably be pretty cheap. Just buy the tubing and pay a machine shop to put the two bends in it for you to save the hassle. A lot of places have pipe benders like muffler shops, motorcycle shops, repair shops, and metal fabrication places. You could ask them how much to do it. You could also probably rent a manual pipe bender from a tool store.
