For those who were not at this past hang, we were offered the chance to hang at THE Natural Bridge IF we did it as another service hang for state parks. Our standard has been one service hang per year but.... it's Natural Bridge folks. They can accommodate more than 100 hangers, are offering a special use permit, to allow camping and they are going to spring for the portajohns. Yeah, we're taking them up on it!
The Virginia State Parks just acquired the Natural Bridge, one of the natural wonders of the world, and are in the process of turning it into a state park. They need help with most everything but have specifically asked for our assistance with trail blaze markers and park boundary markers. They also mentioned a pressing need for trash pick up. It seems the previous owners left a bit of a mess along the roadways.
This hang is not like the previous VSP hangs, which ODH has participated in, where we have been limited in the number of attendees. Natural Bridge, which does not normally have camping of any kind, can accommodate a lot more hangers. Indeed, they have a lot they need help with so, the more the merrier.
This was offered by the park, they came to us based on the reputation we have built for ourselves. Well done folks. Free camping, at great places, in exchange for a couple of hours of cleaning up our environment? I'm good with that. I wish this had been around when my daughter was still "at home" and I was a single parent. I could barely afford to ever take her camping and I love what this teaches kids.
My apologies, did not mean to go off on a rant. The sign up sheet is below. The dates are 4-6 August, this should be before school starts back, right at the end of summer.
I am still getting information but here are a few things that I do know. We will NOT be hanging in the gorge, below the Bridge itself. C'mon, there are no trees there folks. We will be off golf course road. There are no showers or bathrooms. The park is providing port-a-johns. I have no word on water yet but I am assuming it is available. If not, we will figure something out. The sign up sheet includes a tab, at the bottom, for meal planning.
That's it folks. I will let you know more as I find it out but, for now, sign ups are open. I do ask that you be as precise as possible in your attendance count so that I can keep the park updated for the special use permit. Thanks and have fun!
