    Neck draft colar

My experience with those is only on a 0° sleeping bag I have. The sleeping bag also has a hood and two drawcords that allow to cinch the top altogether with the hood.
Then, there is this neck draft colar inside the bag that can be velcroed so it fully wraps around your neck, and cinched with a dedicated drawcord.

Once all these velcro and drawcords are properly installed and cinched, you are totally cocooned, having only the tip of your nose exposed, and you know you will sleep well.

I love my top quilts, because they are much lighter and convenient for getting in and out than this sleeping bag, but this unparalleled comfort is something I miss.

So I was considering at least the neck draft colar option.

For those who have one on their top quilt, do you find it useful ?

Would a neck draft colar on a 40° quilt be nice or useless ?

I had a draft collar added to my 20* along with a pocket to keep the drawstring out my face. The collar is awesome, it keeps more warmth in when moving about, and it is so effective you can kinda cuddle the top of the quilt and not snap it closed when it is cinched just right. I wanted to get one added to my econ40* that is on order but HG is not modding any of the econ lines. So It was a 2 week flip flopping back and forth on the pro's and cons, and price won out, and pulled the trigger on the econ without the added draft collar, been 3 weeks so far and still waiting so I don't have a comparison as of yet, but I do enjoy that extra warmth trapping on my 20* and hopefully soon, if it gets here so I will know if I need to rethink my decision, but I'm pretty confident that on a 40* it should not be that big of a factor.

George at LLG has a neck baffle option on his top quilts as well as the neck cinch. I added the neck baffle option to mine as I was struggling without one on my previous quilt in keeping drafts from seeping down the opening. I haven't had the chance to use it but after laying under it I can see how it will make a different in keeping me warm.

When I know it is going to be cold, I bring along the hood that I made. I like it being separate, I do not want it attached to my quilt.

I also like the onion principle - the more layers, the better. I always carry a down vest, and I also wear it at night. It has a nicer collar than any sleeping bag or top quilt. If I use my ZPacks Goose Down Hood, no cold air will touch my neck. I also want to make a tube scarf to block drafts when I'm not using a hood.

That said, the Sierra Madre Research top quilt has an interesting design for really cold weather.

I added what is basically a ruffle to the inside edge of my TQ. Six inches wide, finished. Just a single strip, hemed. The flap, drops down, covers the opening of my quilt, stops drafts, light, no fiddle factor, I am never aware the flap (ruffle).

I had a cold weather bag, with draft stoppers, I did not luke being so zipped in, made me nervous. I like my new system better, I so not fight it, like I did the internal draft collars.

Pack a synthetic hood purchased from BMW years ago for colder weather. Initially just wore a wool cap, but found for the real cold nights the balaclava like hood increased warmth significantly. Packs down to a real small package and weighs grams. Triple duty piece of gear. Only negative is the color. Only one choice.

I am currently making my own ~30* TQ. I plan to include a draft collar.

I think it makes it much more comfortable when you have the head end cinched to keep out the cold, and it really makes a difference in sealing up drafts. I tried out a Katabatic gear quilt that had this feature and I absolutely loved it.

I think a good hood also is great, but in my mind it solves a different issue, as it doesn't, necessarily, help seal warmth into the top quilt. Does keep the head toasty though.
