I love the sounds of nature. Frogs, whipporwhils, crickets, hell, even cicadas can be nice if it's not a heavy year for them. We once made camp along the Ozark Trail near the top of a ridge that the trail guide described as "occasionally eerie" and as the sun was setting we found out why. It was DEAD. SILENT. Absolutely zero noise. No bugs, no birds, no frogs. The winds didn't even make a rustling in the trees, even though it was blowing gently but steadily. About 0230 or so, the highway a couple miles away was somehow transported to camp and it sounded like a freightliner was driving over my tarp. Scared the hell out of me. I prefer the noises of the woods. Absolute silence is too creepy.
    Cheers,

My last trip was filled with whippoorwills, coyotes, train horns, and a stupid bug that got stuck inside my tarp. Haven't had much luck with things being too quiet.

During winter camping, it was so quiet, that in the middle of the night my own heart beat woke me up. That was bazaar.
I usually wear ear plugs when the forest noise is too distracting for my liking

    I'd rather be hanging.

I usually fall asleep with my earbuds in and watching a movie on low volume if I'm hanging inside, outside its the same sans the 'buds...... Works every night. When I wake up to drain, I'll turn it all off and usually fall back to sleep right away. Gotta love tech!

OP here to report that it isn't too quiet tonight. I am out hiking / camping in southern Indiana and am in my 5th hour of thunder storms. It's beautiful to listen to but, too loud!

Looking at radar, it's far from over too.

I always use earplugs... I find it super helpful. Other option is using a white noise app on my phone with earbuds but that requires power and... I'd just prefer to keep it off.

Same here! The water thing gives me hesitation.
