    !0" Before or After??

Just converted two hammocks to whoopie slings (thanks Arrowhead Equip). But when making the bury the finished bury length was about an inch shorter than when first marked. So if I am to make 10" bury do I want the finished product to be 10" or or is 10" marked out before starting the bury go enough?

I wondered that myself when I first realized (duh!) that the length of the constrictor between the ends of the bury channel is shorter after burying the cord.

I went back to the Sampson rope instructions on these splices. The length recommendations are given before the bury.

Granted, the decrease in length is not large, but these buries are keeping us off the ground, so paying attention to detail is worth the effort.

I found that I lose about 3/4" from my before-bury length with 1/8" Amsteel. For my Whoopie Slings I start with 6" and have tested buries as short as 4" with no slipping.

I've been putting in a few crossways stitches with dental floss anyway.

With the weight this Amsteel is designed to hold, I really doubt any of us are putting even moderate strain on the suspension. I would think you could use a 2-3" bury and it would still hold, though I don't feel like trying it myself.

One of the whoopie slings I destroyed had a starting 7" bury and did not slip. Finished bury was just over 5".

    It failed before it slipped.

So, this first timer was playing around tonite and got this result.

My question is this: I just buried a tapered 5-6 inches. Will this hold me? I figure it will hold my tarp, no problem. I was just trying to see if a simple chinese finger type splice would be sufficient. What say you?

The number that are quoted are all over the map. For a straight bury it should be about 40 times the diameter of the line, so 5" should be good for 1/8" or smaller.

Thanks. I will find out for sure when I test it further. I do not intend to use it for a hammock suspension. Just wondering what the holding power will be.

I routinely hang using buries as short as 3 inches on my fixed eyes. As always never hag where you are not willing to fall.
