1st tarp - holy hell you guys!!!

1st off, kudos to you tarp makers out there. This was ridiculously frustrating and I pretty much hated every minute of it.

I've only owned a sewing machine for 3 weeks now and in that time I've made a hammock, stuff sack, 2 bug nets, 2 costo UQ, and 2 costco TQ'S for my girlfriend and I.

I finally dove into an 11 foot hex tarp out of 1.1 silpoly. I opted not to do cat cuts since this was out of discounted 2nds material and I wanted to just see how the process went.

Man.... you guys have way more patience than me. I was so mad trying to handle this slick *** material. Ultimately I am proud that I finished and I still want to make a winter tarp with doors but i may cool off from this tarp for a little bit.

Anyways... here it is and thanks to everyone who answered my plethora of questions this past week.

Obviously I will be changing out that stretched split ring. Will be using microlock s biners.

I treated it with silnet and didn't realize most of you dilute it. Hope that doesn't affect it too much. Not sure if that's a good or bad thing.

I assume you mean you sealed the ridge line without diluting it. If that is the case you will be fine, I do it that way with no issue.

    A couple questions.

1.) where did you find seconds silpoly?

2.) what was frustrating, just the size or the slickness? Both get way better with practice.

Rbtr has 2nds in black. There's brown and white dots all over my tarp but I could care less.

The size and cutting was fine. Stitching the ridgeline was easy peasy

The hems man!!! Rolling those hems was nuts! And the corner reinforcements. I did 2 triangles but after that I gave up and just used a few inches of grosgrain on the tie out corners stitched to the rolled hem with loops. Looks perfectly fine and has been setup all day curing.

Great job! You certainly dove right in! I haven't done a tarp yet. Stuff sacks, a backpack, TQ etc, but nothing quite that big!

Nice job! Watch those key rings on the ridgeline. I had one blow out on me in not exactly super high winds. I suppose it's better to have a fail point that *isn't* the tarp fabric, but I don't think anything should have or would have failed in those winds.

Yea as you can see with my flea is that the key ring is already splitting. I'm going to try micro 3lb s biners from nite ize. I plan on taking it down around 10pm tonight. That's giving it the 12 hours of curing time.

That's a good looking tarp! I'm shopping sewing machines myself. Won't be long and I'll be feeling your pain. lol

lose the split rings. Just use a continuous loop larks headed on. That one with the dutch fly is already stretched.

Very nice tarp though. Good job. The next one will be easier. check jellyfish report on youtube video for the hem foot. She makes it look easy!
