    Hammock and Suspension

So here is the hammock I finished up a couple of days ago
    IMG_0818.jpgIMG_0819.jpgIMG_0820.jpg

11', 3" out of gray hexon 1.6 oz with knotty mods. I'll probably add a couple of loops to pull it open (don't have to use them). A lot of times my top quilt will fall out when I get out for knightly duties when the hammock clams shut. That might hold it open enough so that doesn't happen. Any experience with this?

I also made a couple of whoopie slings and a UCR to use as an adjustable ridgeline.IMG_0816.jpg

That was my first time working with Amsteel. I cut it a bit close in a couple of places, and my UCR bury is a bit short, but it's probably good enough for the ridgeline. I had tried to make an adjustable ridgeline out of zing it, but that didn't work out. I managed to make a fixed ridgeline at about 83% of the hammock length. Of course, when I dialed in my UCR, it came out almost exactly the same length.

The obligatory weigh in (oh yeah, I made the double end stuff sack too):IMG_0821.jpg

I hope to get this and my new quilts out next weekend for a trial run.

    peace,

Very nice work and good choice on the fabric. I put four side pull-out loops on all my gathered-end hammocks, usually 42" to 44 in from each corner. They will help keep items inside, but they are usually not as necessary if you have Knotty Mods in the hems of your hammock body, as you do. It will be interesting to see how yours performs with both features.

Thanks for the kind words from coachhahn, Flatliner, and jellyfish!

Many years ago I worked for a medical equipment company. I was working on the design of an A-scan biometric ruler for use prior to cataract surgery. This device sends pulses of ultrasound into the eye to measure the distance from the cornea to the lens, the thickness of the lens, and the distance to the retina. These parameters are used to determine the replacement (intra-ocular) lens that enables the patient to see after the cataract is removed. The device uses a logarithmic amplifier, which greatly compresses several decades of signal returns into one. As a result, it is sensitive to noise, and sometimes artifact spikes would end up in the displayed waveform. This wasn't desirable at all, and our marketing folks were very unhappy (they were ALWAYS unhappy). Anyway, I developed an averaging algorithm that removed the unwanted spikes, keeping only the desired returns. This made the marketing folks happy for long enough that they made mugs for us engineers that said "flatliners" on them, as this was around the time that the movie came out. Long story, with very little point except that Flatliner was kind enough to comment on my hammock. :-)

    denisamo and MAD777,

In addition to hammocking and telling long, pointless stories about coffee mugs, I am also a homebrewer. Both my basement and garage are filled with the accoutrements of this avocation. So much so that there is barely room for the hammocking gear!

    kitsap,

The knotty mods are indeed in the hem (with button hole entries). My other hammock is a two layer from Dutch. With the UQ in place, it clams up on the TQ, and it frequently falls out when I get out of the hammock to answer nature's call. So I'll probably install some pull-out loops to try to see if this helps. In fact, I could just use binder clips for a trial run. I suspect the pull-outs would damp the rocking motion. I kind of like that swinging as I drift off to sleep... Seems like there are always trade offs.
