    jungle hammock sag

Hey guys I'm new to hammocking and I got a claytor jungle hammock. When ever I hang it with lots of sag or without the centre line is very prominent/tight and the sides are quite loose.
I am worried that it has stretched from sitting sideways on it. Any thoughts or advice?

Hey pazza, welcome to the forums. I sit sideways in mine all the time, so I doubt you've damaged it in any way. Try pulling the ends of hammock apart some where the suspension line goes through the channel. This will put more of the load on the edges and less on the center. The problem you are describing, as I understand it. is usually found more with whipped end hammocks than with channel end hammocks, so I'm a little stumped. But there are many here far wiser than I.

It seems to me though that the JH doesn't need much sag at all because it is so long.

How do you have the suspension going thru the end channels? The hammock needs to be able to slide on the suspension to "self adjust". If you have tied the end tight this could cause the problem you described.

You can see on the right side of this image that the suspension strap goes through a channel that is sewn in the hammock body. a bowline is tied in one end- the remainder is passed through the bowline and secured to itself with two half-hitches. I was suggesting spreading the channel ends so that they are not bunched together so much.

Hey thanksbfor all the help guys. When I get home tonight I'm going to add less sag. The ends are also tightly bunched so I will spread the channels oa it. Didnrealise that played a part so I left them tight.
    Thanks again

    Success!

Hey guys thanks for the advise. I tried both suggestions and I am happily sitting in my hammock currently without the tight material down the centre.

To recap, I feel that the channels were too bunched up as I never "reset" them so they just got tighter. I also used less sag.

    Thanks again guys!

Miisterwright, when you stated "I was suggesting spreading the channel ends so that they are not bunched together so much." I'm not sure what you mean. Would the channels just scrunch back up once you got into the hammock? Would you explain your idea to me please. Thanks

Sure, Mitch. A hammock that is made with a channel in the ends is really just a rectangular piece of fabric. If you you find that the center of the hammock is tight and the sides are "floppy", then obviously the sides need to be tightened and the center loosened. Because the strap that goes through the hammock creates a "U" shape, the farther from the center/bottom of the "U" the sides of the hammock are, the tighter they are in relation to the center. The middle of the hammock sits in the "belly" of the "U" and the edges climb the sides of the "U", and since the fabric is a rectangle the centers of each end are closer the one another than each end of either side.

Let me say again that this is not something I've personally had a problem with in a Claytor JH.

I realize my explanation may be confusing. If so I may be able to make a diagram later on. Or I'm sure someone else here could explain it better. I think the amount of sag is more likely the culprit than anything to do with the ends, though.
