You too Laura! This is going to be an awesome hang. There are so many great hangs in ME!
We have to do the same thing on our car. Your car has the rails, but not the cross members? You said you used 2x4's how did you attach the 2x4 to the rails. Can you post a pic of how you guys did it? We have a 2003 Jeep liberty with the rails going the length of the car but no cross bars. I was just going to zip tie the 2x4 to the rails, and use ratchet straps to hold the canoe. Thanks
No rails, so we stacked wood in the spot where the rails would be and gorilla glued the cross piece (ended up with 2x6) to those stacks. If you routed a slot on the wooden cross piece, you could insert it over your rails.
We also routed out a rectangle to try to contain the foam block. Each cross piece is held on by friction, with the boat and the straps that came with the foam blocks (Ocean State Job Lot, $20) strapped through the doors.
The 2x6 contraptions are loose until the boat is placed on them and strapped down.
To load:
Strap foam blocks to boat.
Place 2x6 on roof lining up (one hopes) with where the foam blocks will land.
Lift boat + foam blocks into 2x6.
Once lined up, cinch everything down.
The test run went fine, and so far I've made it about 50 miles. Stopped to tighten everything down a bit, but the boat is completely stable.
I say "we" but Mike engineered ends implemented this whole project, so all the credit goes to him.
One more to bait the hook… morning on the pond.
…still not too late to toss the hammock in the car and come on up!

Great job! I didn't realize you had no rails. Ours should be easier, we have rails, just need cross bars. That's what zip ties, 2x4 and ratchet straps are for!
We be hangin'...
