    Benefits of ridgeline over tarp?

I currently use a line at each end of my tarp with figure 9s. I have seen some using a ridgeline over the tarp with the tarp suspended by prussiks (sp). Is there any advantage to this?

Its what the cool kids are doing...

Well, I think, they do it because it is "easier". There is another thread somewhere around here on this very topic. Probably in this section.

    Found that old thread...here..

I appreciate the reference but it really didn't answer my question. I think Shug had some reference to this in one of his videos (excellent and entertaining as always). My question is why would I use a ridgeline, over or under, at all. What makes it better than just attaching the ends of the tarp directly to the trees using figure 9s.

I like it because you can adjust the tarp to center over the hammock without having to re-tie the tarp's suspension.

For me, that is the BEST point!
I also use the ridgeline under the tarp as a clothes line to dry stuff...not much of an option if the RL is over the tarp

Using a ridgeline also puts less stress on the tarp.

How's that? If I have to pull my tie-outs with 25# of force, does it matter if it is coming from a Prusik or a 'biner?

I meant the stress on the stitching of the tarp has more stress by not using a ridgeline since that 25# of force is on the ridgeline rope instead of tarp stiching.

But you still have to connect the tarp's tie-outs tot he prusik knots. And, you'll use the same force as you would if those tie-outs were tied to a cord wrapped around a tree.
