Hey all,
Related to this thread about snow in Arizona (http://www.hammockforums.net/forum/s...ad.php?t=13805), how do you all you winter hangers anchor your tarps in deep snow, shallow snow, and just plain frozen ground?
I've not done any winter hanging, but am thinking this might be the year to start.....

For deep snow these work pretty well http://www.rei.com/product/358111. Depending on how deep the snow is you can tie to the tops of small trees/large bushes. I've also heard of people using cds buried in the snow. For frozen ground, look for rocks to set on your tieouts.
Besides using a deadman (actually, I've never done a deadman myself), I've had great success taking my alum stake and burying it sideways. Here's a pic showing it, but wedged between rocks. I drive the stake sideways into the snow and then pile snow on top. It has held well for me.
Obviously, this method of burying a stake sideways in the snow depends on the weight and wetness of the snow.
I've tried the snow and sand 'stakes' like these, but always seemed like a PITA to me.
I tried these from SMC this year and I like them. They do a pretty good job of holding if the snow is heavy enough. But, with the dry fluffy snow, the parachute stakes are the best thing going once you get them set-up.

I'm lucky to live in an area that has a lot of rocks. Terrible for groundlings, wonderful for hammocks. When the ground freezes up here in Flagstaff, I often have my pick of rocks to attach to. LNT principle #1.

Wow, I haven't seen those in a while! I remember as a kid, those were the stakes we used/broke. Ug!
