rain fly ideas

i got my first eno hammock for christmas, i'm looking for weather protection. i read that the socks will create too much condensation but they are light and stop the wind, but i want to make something light and rain proof similar to a sock. does anyone have any ideas, i couldn't find threads on it.

I don't know of anything besides a tarp that's a good option to keep you dry in the rain. WPB bivies (like a sock) can probably work for snow if you don't need a sheltered place to cook and such, but I wouldn't want to depend on it as my only shelter.

You'll need somewhere to pack up, cook, change clothes, etc. Socks aren't good for that.

Maybe a small tarp in addition to a sock?

so i had an idea for making a tube of nylon. it would end up being like that plastic kids tunnel thing. well i need some help brain storming. i need to make poles to keep it round. i was thinking about using tubing for ice machines. does anyone have ideas?

the image that comes to mind is the covers on the old conestoga wagons- fabric held up by long, thin(bendable) supports..I think you could either stake them to the ground (hoop tent) or encircle the hammock, but getting in and out might become difficult.

I know fin did some cool looking hoop type of a sock. check his gallery, or search under "socks".

I would just go with a tarp for now, if'n you want my advice. More room, less claustrophobic, less chance of condensation, etc., etc.....

By the time you add poles and hoops and such it will no longer be lighter. Better to just use a small tarp for rain and the sock for cold weather/wind driven snow/high winds. For super cold and windy a good winter tarp will go a long way if it is a claustrophobia thing. Hoops or poles will not get rid of condensation.

Try tyvek to figure out dimensions of what you want. Ed speers sells really affordable silnylon and has great service, so you can make your own.

I was thinking it would just literally be like one of those kids tunnels/tubes just hanging around a hammock. I'm not building until someone has a sale on ripstop. But I may just go with an A Frame tarp setup for starters then get more adventurous with the new design.
