Trimming straps was a good idea until...

...I went up against a big fat tree. And a larger and normal spacing to make it even worse. So much for shaving grams

Not much strap left to spare there. And I still didn't get a proper 30° hang. Just enough to be comfortable, though.

I think I'll actually trim these a little shorter, and get another standard set for the "unknown" trips where you may not have the luxury of being choosy.

This was the first time I ran into this in 5+ years. It's never a problem since I don't camp in actual sites and hang wherever I want. But I tried something different this trip. I could have made a homemade extender with some spare cordage, but I was just too lazy.

I carry a couple of amsteel dog bones for just such an emergency. I can add a couple of feet to my straps if I have to. I've had to larkshead knot them onto the loops of my straps to help me make it around a larger tree and get my hang on.

I like that. Maybe I'll just go that route given the low weight/bulk and rare chance I'll even need them again.

I also carry a dogbone. It works great in suspension emergencies, but it can also be multi-use. If you loop it through itself around a tree, you can biner a gravity filter to it, hang a pack or trash bag, etc...

I use straps of two different lengths, so I have a longer one for the bigger tree.

I ordered a 6' dogbone yesterday from AHE after I ran into this problem. I tried to think of something smaller and lighter than the extra daisy chain tree strap I've been carrying. Glad to see it's working for others.

Is the dog bone just a length of amsteel with two loops on the ends? Any photos of in use?

Hmmmm...that's an interesting idea. I have six and eight foot Kevlar straps. It might be interesting to carry one of each. I always have an extra pair of five foot dog bones with me.

Yes, my pack weighs 70lbs, but it's all light weight gear....

Yes...I'm pretty sure it's Amsteel. Here's a picture from the Arrowhead Equipment store, where I made my order.

Have to say, I've made the same mistake myself. Like a lot of the other guys I keep two 2' amsteel dog bones just in case the 4' straps are not enough.
