    Tato Hammock Stand Questions

I got a Tato hammock stand for Father's Day. Yay!!!

I love it, but I feel a bit like a babe in the woods. I've been hammock camping for years now, but I've got a bunch of noob questions all over, as this thing is a good deal different from a tree.

    1) What's it made of? I'm hoping Al, or some other non-rusting metal. It came with the coating already off in several places, and really that's fine by me as long as it isn't needed to prevent Bad Things(tm) from happening to the metal. I will not be hauling a 24 lb stand anywhere I would stealth camp, and I live in a place where black metal gets hot quickly. Silver color is quite alright by me...as long as it won't rust.

    2) Suspension? Okay, my whoopie slings have just a bit too long of a minimum length to work here (c. 18"). I could get it to hang, but my keister would be a few inches over the ground, and as an old fart with hip arthritis, one of the reasons I favor a hammock is being able to "get out of bed" at a reasonable height. I could splice up a fixed length suspension for my favorite hammock, but I'd really like an adjustable suspension. Any thoughts? Right now my leading idea involves some amsteel with an eye on one end, and a 'biner clipped into a marlinspike hitch to hook my hammock's continuous loops into. Anyone have anything more elegant?

    3) Any reason I shouldn't substitute those split ring guyline attachment points with larks-headed on lash-it continual loops? Since I'm not going backpacking with the thing, this looks like a good place for figure-9 biners and some reflective cordage.

    4) Tarp attachment...so normally I use a CRL. That kind of works here, but leaves most of my CRL as a pile of cordage to trip over. I'm thinking of hooking some manner of Dutch hardware up there. Any suggestions from those who have come before? My first inclination is Stingerz and a bit of lash it lark's headed onto the ends of my tarp.

    Thanks ahead!

    Following.
I just ordered one for myself on Friday I had a lot of questions as well and didn't really find the answers I was looking for. I figured I'd just take my chances.

I believe it's all aluminium, btw.

It is aluminum. I like to use an 8 inch loop on the foot end and a whoopie sling on the head end of an 11 foot hammock. The tarp should be under the ridgepole and I attach it to the yellow loop on the biner. Enjoy your stand, it is a work of art.

There's a pic in the linked post that shows a 12' tarp hung underneath as mentioned.

And here's a close up of hammock and tarp connection to the ridgepole. Hope it helps.

    @Dutch, Thanks! I'll give that a try!

@Ratdog, thanks for the pics! I can't quite see how you have your tarp attached. I know where it's attached, but do you have cordage-on-cordage at the zing-it? I'm afraid over time I might saw through it if I do that, and am considering ridgeline biners there or similar.

Ha, just looked, my snakeskinz are covering all the good stuff.

As it happens, I have a set of Stingerz attached to the peak tie out points of the tarp and clip nicely into the yellow line on the Tato Stand. No fuss, no muss. Just got lucky I guess.

    4) Tarp attachment
Since I have multiple tarps, I decided to make one specifically dedicated for the Tato Stand, so I wouldn't have to monkey around with adjustments.
I shortened the existing tarp ridge line, added a fixed loop on one end, and a Dutch Wasp on the other.
I added a mini-biner to each end of the stand, on the cordage above the supplied Tato biner.
Connect the loop end to one mini-biner, run the other end through the other mini-biner and tighten with the Wasp.
Trimmed the excess ridge line and now have a clean , fitted solution. Sets up in a snap.
I can add pics if my blah-blah words are confusing.

This is a suggestion from a friend that he uses on the stand:

Foot end: CL on the hammock, attached to a Dutch Biner then a doubled up CL attached to the supplied carabiner

Head end: CL from hammock, Dutch biner, doubled up whoopie sling, (this allows to make some adjustments ). A "regular" length whoopie is too long. On the whoopie sling, hook both ends (loops) to the same biner then hook the created other end to the supplied biner.

I've found that two 15" continuous loops with toggles allows you to connect any of Dutch's 11' hammocks (with 8" continuous loops) perfectly. I just leave the 15" loops & toggles on the stand, so I can swap out hammocks in seconds.
