leiavoia's Gemini Underquilt system would be a great scout project. Mine has kept me warm so far down into the upper 30's. I haven't tried it any colder than that yet. While the clews work great, they are a tangled mess waiting to happen for a bunch of scouts. I built one with 4 way stretch fabric in lieu of the clews, and it works great! It is just a little added bulk and weight over the clews, but it still fits into the down throw stuff sack. It would be a minimal amount of sewing. I suppose you could capture the stretch fabric under the snaps as you put them on, but you'll need a channel in the outer ends to run a short length of cord through to attach it to the hammock suspension.

I just had the UQ shown in this video down to 40*, wouldn't be too hard to add one more full size down throw to what you already have and then add the ends . Just some food for thought.

    Good luck,

I see that this is a bit of a dated thread - but I am curious:
What was your solution for underquilts?

I ask as I made some of my own gear, and was contemplating what it would take to outfit our (small) troop with DIY gear.

I was going to ask how you made the CDT that didn't hold up to the lower temperatures,
but reread your first post and found the answer there.
I'm hoping that my approach for a modified CDT works a bit better.
I seam ripped, and used two quilts to make a dual layer 45x60.
The size seems to work well - but I've not yet had a chance to test it in colder than 60 degree weather.
That will change soon enough as fall rolls in.

I find my single layer CDT UQ to work well down into the 40s. I also have another layer that I kam snap in and I've had that down to 19. I stayed toasty except for my feet which always get cold under 60*. I ripped the seams on my base quilt vertically to have horizontal tubes and the insert was seam ripped horizontally for vertical tubes. It is a little bulky, and it's definitely heavier than a proper dedicated low temp underquilt, but I have less than $100 in what amounts to two UQs, and it's still lighter, warmer and packs smaller than my pad. Not to mention it's exponentially more comfortable than the pad.
    Cheers,
