Permethrin sprayed liberally on hammock insulation and clothes allow to dry well. And use at will. Wears off eventually but works pretty well for the purpose. As far as bug spray (I know I'm gonna get some flack ) but I use 100 percent deet which is actually slightly less than 100 percent. I know it's said it could damage gear but I've nvr had it damage anything at least not that I could tell.ive tried just about everything from natural oils to old time woodsman. Despite some drawbacks the deet/ permethrin combo works for me.
You can soak your gear in Permethrin but you will still struggle with the mosquitos here in the south without some net most likely. This is especially true if you plan to do any warm/hot weather camping where they show up in force. While you can theoretically make your gear very insect repellant, it's hard to then stay covered up in your quilts in the heat. To combat that you could cover yourself in bug spray, but now we are talking about a LOT of chemicals.
Out of curiosity, what is the hesitation in picking up a bug net? There are several good options, even some easy DIY ones, that could be easily added to an Eno.
It really depends on when you are going and where you are going. This time of year I wouldn't start to consider sleeping in a hammock without a bug net. DutchWareGear, SimplyLightDesigns, etc. offer an add-on bug nets that work well. I've been watching Reddmage's thru-hike and the bugs have been so bad that he's wearing a head net most days now so the bugs will be bad even if you treat your hammock with permethrin.
Where can i buy cheap bug nets for the eno double nest?
Several of the cottage vendors here could hook you up with something probably in the $50-60 range. However, you could also look at the Guardian Bug Net from Eno since it's actually designed for your hammock which is shorter than most of the stuff you'll find here. Those nets usually go for ~$45 on Amazon, though you might be able to pick them up even cheaper if you hunt around.
Or if you are handy you could make yourself a Fronkey style net pretty easily. There are good instruction in the DIY forum here and some videos on YouTube.
As long as you have a ridgeline I've been using a dutchwear. Bottom entry net this year and I like it a lot.
Amazon, Kings full bug net $35. Fits any hammock!
Thanks to all!
Citronella and Lemon Eucalyptus essential oils are natural. I haven't played with my own blend, but have modified a few commercial natural repellants with some luck. Mosquitos love me. If others are attacked except me, then my stuff is working..
