    Hammock Set Up Weights

so i'm still really new to hammocks and to be honest haven't tried again since my last failed attempt long ago..... i've been focusing on reducing my pack weight and becoming a light weight hiker. just to put this out there i have no interest in cuben fiber tarps ect... it's just way to expensive for me being a weekend guy, i can't justify paying 3x the cost when i can only get out every couple of months for a few days at best....

so my question is how light can a complete set up get going with silnylon? i'm talking hammock, tarp, straps, suspension, quilts ect... for a 3 season set up? from my understanding you generally need an under quilt for any temps below 70 (probably depends on person) but that's what i've heard in general. so currently i can get a tent/stakes/guy lines ect.. around 27-36oz and my sleep (pad, pillow, quilt) around 34-47oz depending on which quilt i use. so my total shelter/sleep system would be around 3-5lbs can i meet that or do better with a hammock?

this is all assuming i can find a hammock i can fall asleep in

    This is what I have:

11' Simply Light Designs Tree Runner SL hammock in 1.6 Hexon
SLD Trail Haven tarp in 1.1 silpoly
    SLD full bug net
Hammock Gear Econ 40* top quilt and under quilt

Total weight with all straps, whoopies, stakes, stuff sacks, etc. is 82 oz., or a little over 5 lbs.

You can get lighter stuff but this is what I have, hope it helps.

PS - I got the weights for the TQ and UQ from the Hammock Gear website, all other items I weighed myself.

it does, thanks! looks like it's pretty comparable for everything included. you can shave a few oz here and there by eliminating/combining stuff sacks ect...

One thing to note though is that my quilts are only 40*.

You would probably need 20* quilts where you are for 3 season and this would add another 12 ozs. or so for the Econ models.

You could drop several ounces if you went with more expensive quilts

This is one of my fairly light fair-weather "summery" set-ups, but I could bring it up to a full 5 pounds and have some nice extra insulation...

8 oz Ten-Yard Hang suspension kit
9 oz DIY 1.0 Eagle Feather ROBIC netless Hammock
9 oz DIY Forune Cookie full-enclosure zippered bug net
    9 oz DIY K.I.S.S. 6' x 9' rectangle tarp (hung asym-style)
3 oz Stakes, CRL, and guy lines
30 oz Loco Libre Gear 40F Serrano TQ/50F Operator Habanero UQ*

= 4.25 pounds (actual carry weight as packed)

    * I have taken this UQ down into the mid 40s quite comfortably several times; it was 48F when I woke up in it this AM -- GTG!

I could definitely save an ounce or so on the hammock/bug net combo with the right DIY integrated-net hammock or a Dutchware Chameleon in Hexon 1.0.

I am by no means an ultralight hiker -- nor do I strive to be one -- but a sub-5-pound shelter/sleep system like this is a reasonable basis around which to shoot for a comfortable base weight approaching 15 pounds for at least half the year where I live without going to extraordinary lengths or expense.

If I've successfully uploaded this, here's my summertime "big 3". Total is 5.37 lbs., just a hair under 3 lbs. without the pack and my "sit pad".

I think you can meet those if you choose your gear wisely. I like to be extra comfy sleeping, for my New England 3 Season I have a 20*F set up. I use this when backpacking.

    HG TQ 20*F
    Sheltowee Boone Hammock 20*F
    Bug net
    WL Big Daddy tarp
Stakes + Straps + whoopie slings

    Grand total of 88oz = 5.5lbs

For my set up, I could probably lose 1lb with different tarp, and different hammock/UQ setup. Also don't always need the 20*F TQ.

I'm sure more folks will pitch in, there's a lot of lightweight setups out there.
    I'd rather be hanging.
