    Question about homemade hammock stand.

My hammock is 9ft 2in. My brother is going to make me a tripod stand with a top pole. How long does the top pole need to be.

Im a total newbie. I read so many posts where sleeping in a hammock is more comfortable than a bed for some people I want to give it a try.

I think around 14 feet. Doesn't have to be precise. A foot or so either way will work. I had mine at 16 feet which seemed to be too long. Just hung in a 9 foot hammock with a 14 foot ridgepole and it seemed just right.

Uugh the metal pipe comes in 10 ft sections. And i think my room is only 14 feet.

I wish i could just use the walls but I cant.

My ridge poles are 12 feet, and that is plenty.

I saw a pvc pipe stand and thought about using that for a ridge pole but worry about the strength of it. It was cut in half and joined with a connector.

Your suspension may influence things. My straps and whoopie slings need a couple feet on each end. I also use a tarp in a diamond configuration which needs 12'-13'. Inside you won't need that.

Really, the ridgepole only needs to be about 1' longer the total length of the continuous loops on your hammock (I strongly suggest them if you don't have them, very versatile). You can see that here in mine.

I have 2 pipe stands, one 12 foot wide, the other is 14, and my 11 foot hammock (110" ridgeline) works on both stands, no problem. Also, one stand is made from 1.25" GALV pipe, the other is made from 1" GALV pipe. Both are plenty sturdy, but. I much prefer the 1.25" pipe.
