    Ground cloth idea

So I've got a box of polycro window insulation to try out for a new ground cloth and I've got an idea.

What if I were to make a few velcro patches on the inside of my cuben tarp. Say 3-4" up from the bottom edge. I would then use velcro on the polycro and attach it to the tarp so they overlap like a pair of shingles. My ground cloth would essentially act as a bit of side wall/tarp extension with a built in window. This would let me store stuff on that side of the hammock as far out as I want without having to deal with rain spatter. I could technically put things out past the original coverage of the tarp if they are in the corner where the polycro meets the ground.

Here is a crude conceptual picture of what I'm imagining.

I love it when people think outside the box, or in this case, outside the tarp!

I thought about doing that but only as a tarp extention like mud flaps you see on some enclosed shelters. Never thought about extending it and incorporating it into a ground cover. Great idea.

Would you use full length velcro or pieces spaced out? I thought any openings would still allow some air under the tarp. Would you stake out the ground cover where it bends?

If it will hold, I'd want just a few pieces of velcro to save weight and keep my tarp from becoming a big clunky mess to pack.
I'm hoping if it does fall down, it would just fall over anything that might be exposed.
I don't think air flow will matter much, well see.

Staking it down would be hard to do since the height I set the tarp or any dips in the ground would throw off where the bend line is. I'd probably just hold it down with spare gear on the inside.

I might entertain using something like some 1g micro stakes on the other side of the ground cloth. I imagine the whole works would be a huge fiddly mess in any sort of wind.

Would it extend all the way to the end? I might recommend having it start one or two feet from both ends, so rain from the openings at head and foot doesn't hit it and create a pool. Just a thought.

I think you'll find a gear-hammock suspended below yours, and from the same suspension, to be better
Mine is even inside my Fronkey-Net which seals up to it, and not my UQ... It acts like an UQP, I have instant and bug-free access to my stuff without having to get up.
...oh, and I don't have to scrape the mud off of it when it's time to pack up

I like this idea! I don't think I would stake it out - but it reminds me of someone's bugnet that incorporates "rock pockets" to pull the bugnet down and seal it. I can easily see grabbing a few rocks and having that plus gear being enough to keep it in place. Let us know how it works!

I have gear hammocks but am looking at using Dutch straps with beetle buckles and spreader bar that came with my Chameleons to put everything next to me when I am alone.
