    Presidential Traverse

I'm back in the country for a week longer then I expected. So I'm thinking of squeezing in a trip. I have a few questions for anyone who has done a presidential traverse. First concern is hang spots being above tree line on the moon scape where have you set up your hammock. I have enough time in the whites to know you have to be flexible and able to punch a few extra miles to go to sleep with a hammock. Second transportation how do you get back to your car without spotting a car had anyone ever used a AMC shuttle?

If anyone is up for this this weekend or week PM me we can talk and see if our fitness and social views align.

    Cheers,
    Marshall

U.S. Forest Service regulations say that camping in White Mtn Natl Forest is not permitted in the alpine zone (= where trees are less than 8' tall), except when camping on 2' or more of snow! So where it's legal, there will be trees. https://www.fs.usda.gov/Internet/FSE...rdb5363715.pdf

It's been a few years but I've used the shuttles in the Whites, but I found them to be a god option if you have no other.. It's a much better strategy to use the shuttle in the beginning to get to your trail head than to try to catch one at the end. You will have to hike down below treeline to find suitable hang spots.

Not only is there no hanging spots above the tree line, it's a long way down to the trees. AMC really needs to install some posts outside their huts.

The AMC shuttles work, but you definitely want to shuttle to the start point.

The presidential range is a long ridge walk, but there are a few (usually pretty steep) trails heading down to trees if you can't make it across before dark. I've never had to go to ground in the whites, but I have had to do some night hiking to find a spot. The shuttles are great, I'd recommend saving a PDF of the schedule so you have it when you need it as cell coverage can be spotty.

If you go north to south, start at Appalachia trailhead and take Valley Way trail. The official campsite close to the Madison tree line has a few good hang spots (I hung there).

From there it is a long day in a good weather to Mt.Pierce and to ho below the tree line to find a hang spot.

We did the length of the Presis in Fall of 2015- north to south. I'd say hike Adams and Madison.. stay near Grey Knob... then hike over Jefferson, Clay.. stop on top at Mt W for lunch.. it's downhill mostly from there past Lake of the Clouds and up Monroe and then try to find a place to hang past Eisenhower. It's a looooong day! Last day do Pierce and Jackson.

    Presidential Traverse

Also white mountain taxi was recommended to us- we shuttled using AMC van to the trailhead.
