    Turtledog stand test failed...

Well, I have a need for the hammock stand I started last week so I got it all rigged up to test it. I'm using 1" structure aluminum for the ridgeline with ash tenons in the center 19" section. The original pieces are 6' each and I have a 12' tarp so added that center section. As the progression of pictures show, the ridgeline bowed as I put weight in the hammock and then the thing snapped at one of the joints. The whole thing tumbled down. Notice how the money shot was a little off center as my wife started running to me. So I'm either going to get fence rail or see if my friend can get me a piece of 1" inside aluminum pipe as a sleeve to go over the other pipe. The hammock is my mom's tablecloth hammock I am airing out after her house fire. Better to use that than my $200 WBRRXLC!!!

Well..... your now an official member of "the club"... stuff like this happens... glad your Ok.

I have a Turtledog using an aluminum fence pole that did exactly the same thing to me.... cut down the pipe to a shorter length and that seemed to do the trick.

I have officially converted to a different design though. I don't trust the Turtledog stand anymore. I keep it around just on case someone needs to borrow it but it's just not as stable as I would prefer.

Could you elaborate please? I'm looking to build a portable stand, and was only looking at the turtle of and the super simple inverted tee (it's only drawback is not being as conducive to uneven ground

I wonder if that Al pole would hold if you reinforced with say schedule80 PVC inside?

Just a little bruise on my right shoulder where the tripod nailed me. A little bruised pride too but hey, I set it up and tested it for a reason! I almost actually wore a hardhat, which I should have...

No, as this was 1" OD and 3/4" ID square tubing. I am going to get fence rail tuesday and my friend is looking to see if he has 1" ID to slide over the the 1" OD aluminum. I'll figure it out this week!

Glad you are okay. I think I got bruises just by looking at the photos.

Get a fence top rail and slide a 1" conduit into it. A little extra weight but very strong.
