    Question hammock repair

    Hi, all,

We have a hammock that is of sentimental value, in addition to being a great hammock. (It was hauled all the way back to Michigan FROM HONDURAS by our daughter several years ago.) This spring, birds decided that the nylon strings used to suspend the hammock would make good nesting material and damaged about 10 of the 20 on one end. We have looked in West Michigan and Chicago for hammock repair people to no avail. Online repair kits appear to be for patching the sling. We could buy nylon strings to replace the broken ones but the way these are tied on either end (between sling and hanging end of hammock) looks difficult to us with no experience. (see attached photos---I will try to attach three but may only be able to do one so may post a follow up with the other two.)

Any suggestions will be most appreciated.

Thank you for your time and interest.

You may get some help here, but most of us don't spend time in hammocks like the one in the pictures above.

Repair and restoration of valued possessions can be costly and time consuming. Being into knots, I'd be tempted to buy some extra cord and tie some knots. If I did it, it would not look exactly new when done, but it might still work.
It might be easiest to get more hammocks--if it's affordable.

Thanks for your response. I am not great at knots so am interested in your opinion: are there knots that would allow a new piece of nylon to be tied into place between the broken ends and not slip or fail?

A 10 second google search for macrame in Holland Michigan reviled this site, http://www.sallyengland.com/pagecv/. Might try giving her a call. Looks up her alley although probably not cheap.

Holy crap! If that Sally England woman can't do it, NOBODY can fix it!!! Her work is AMAZING!!! I wouldn't pay $5 to hang most of her art pieces on my wall as it is not my taste, but I sure can appreciate the intricacy of that body of work!! In agreement, she probably ain't cheap. Maybe she has a good heart though...

I have contacted Sally but have not yet heard back. I am not optimistic about her getting involved as it looks like she is primarily uses macrame as an art form, creating things to be displayed in art shows and the like.

Wow Memory Lane. The hammock is definately Macrame. The knots are not as complicated as they look. Lots of 1960--1980's booklets on how to do the knots. Hammocks, chair swings, ceiling to floor flower pot holders were all the rage. Practically every woman was producing some type of macrame.

Give me a Email if the other Sally does not work out.

Zeppelin bend is a very secure knot--its two interlocking overhand knots--and the last pass has both cords going through the same hole in opposite directions--that way they pull against each other in that tight hole.
Copy zeppelin bend from correct picture directions--because it's possible to tie it wrong--see evil imposter. It's easy to tie a zeppelin bend.
