This. My 0° and 20° topquilts are 56" but I always sleep on my side and have wide shoulders (I'm 5'11" and 220 lbs.) My 40° is rectangular and normal width but full coverage isn't so critical when it's warm.

Like others have said: wider ones are almost required for ground use but not necessary for hanging. I also prefer non-tapered (with over-stuff to compensate for the additional area of the non-tapered) for the comfort factor.

The reason there are so many options is because everyone has different preferences, body types and sleeping habits. There is no right answer or standard.

So for someone like myself, 38 chest/jacket size & 48" over the shoulder measurement, I'm thinking I can use a 52" on the ground when I have to as well right? Or should I probably bump up to 55"?

52" should be plenty. I'm a 44" chest size and I use an extra large MLD spirit on the ground - it has a 52" shoulder girth and it's roomy. Note that I put my 2 1/2" thick air mattress inside the quilt (lower section) which takes up even a little more room and it's still comfortable.
