I decided to embark on the diy tarp journey. I'll admit that it was much more time consuming than I expected, but with careful attention it comes together.
First, let me pay tribute to all of those sage masters here who've freely shared their wisdom and experience. Kitsap, Jelly, grizz, tacblades, etc. Many thanks to you all.
This was made from 1.6 silpoly (kind of heavy, but durable) from RBTR in morrocan blue. Mara 70 thread in gray. Standard flat felled seam on the Ridge and a double rolled hem on the perimeter.
Some reduced cat cuts were installed using some flexible wood strips as a guide and the overall dimensions are comparable to a ugq hex 12.
The tie outs are half inch grosgrain with beastie d's for future tarp poles and line loc 3 for the tie down cordage. The ridge line has 3/4 inch grosgrain with plastic triangles.
Overall, I'm very pleased with the end result. Tarps aren't easy. You have to stick with good technique. Use clips if necessary to help keep the lines consistent. Layout is a pain when working with ten yards of fabric. It's a challenging project with a nice reward at the end.
Reinforcement patches were 300d that were cut on the radius. In retrospect, I could have made the radius larger, but the small patches seem to work well in distributing the load and ironing of any wrinkles.
There are many ways to skin a cat. I just picked some of the elements I thought may work. I'm happy with the end result.
Let me know what you think. Suggestions? Improvements?
Any feedback would be greatly appreciated.
Happy hanging.
