Diagonal lay and Diamond tarp coverage

Hi all, i was a little nervous on my last hang as the edge of my sleeping pad and sleeping sack was scary close to the edge of the tarp as i was laying diagonally, if i would have taken it any lower im afraid the condensation would get me wet. Im pretty new at this and i wondered if i just bought the wrong tarp? Is there any tips and tricks when it comes to diagonal lay and diamond tarps?

The hammock is a Ticket To The Moon double hammock (my ridgeline is 240cm/94,5inches at the moment) and the tarp is the TTTM diamond tarp 350cm/137,8inches diagonal length.

let me know if there is another thread that i shoud post this in!

While I have and use a couple of diamond tarps, I consider them more of a fair weather tarp as IMO most of them are not long enough to provide enough coverage during a heavy rain. I have one that is ok for very light rain and another longer one that is a bit better but the shape of these tarps is just too likely to allow the rain to get to your gear.

A 11 ft ( or 12ft or 13ft) rectangular tarp with doors would be ideal.
I am still 18 but with 52 years of experience !

For hammock camping I have never fared well with a asym tarp (the only exception being my first setup - a hennessey). The minor weight penalty of a rectangular tarp is more than offset by a dry night in a rainstorm. if the tarp ridgeline is set very close to the hammock ridgeline, a diamond or asym tarp can work just fine

son and I spent a fairly rainy weekend up at the lake a while back, and he stayed warm and dry until the last morning, when he had a brain fart, and unstaked the one side getting out and didn't bother to stake it back in

I use a DIY asym made similar to Dutch's wide asym tarp, with some added tie outs. It does great for fair weather, and summer nights when it's hot and I need extra air flow. I hadn't had it out in a heavy storm but I'm confident that with my 11'6" ridgeline in storm mode I'd be covered well enough to hold out (unless it's blowing crazy sideways). Asym tarps take a bit more technical hanging sometimes to cover during storms, but it's doable.

8x10 tarps can be pitched on the diagonal to provide an asym diamond that works beautifully with a diagonal lay. Makes for a pretty long RL on the tarp, but that can be an advantage with a longer tarp.

You should be okay in well-forested areas interior to the coast. However, in coastal areas, winds are highly variable, can switch directions every few minutes, and your hammock can quickly get soaked from precipitation blowing under the tarp. You may also encounter blowing precipitation camping at elevation with a diamond tarp.
