I had a great summer hike on the Superior Hiking Trail. This time I hiked 27 miles from Cook County Road 45(just north of Cascade River to Oberg Mountain) in two days. I chose to hike this section because I enjoyed it last year and it has my favorite campsite on the trail at Lake Agnes. The site is your stereotypical northern Minnesota lakeside (with loons and everything). My path took me down the Cascade River, over several mountains with beautiful overlooks. The second day took me through Lutsen Ski Area, the Poplar River, and more.
I met several great folks along the trail and at the campsite. The SHT is notoriously muddy. The trail was pretty dry. More weeds than usual due to good growing conditions this summer. Never had to apply bug spray (but my clothes were treated with Permethrin!).
I am trying not too over pack food and water. I still had lots of food leftover. I only carried one liter of water instead of two. I did have an issue on day 2. The Poplar River in Lutsen water was hard to get to due to rock walls near the crossing. I opted to try to make it the next 5 miles with less than a half a bottle of water. That was a bad idea with the higher temps and the hilly trail. I made it to the next water source, but it was a bad choice. Live and learn.
