    DIY 12' Winter Tarp

I scored 13 yards of PU4000 at Spring MAHHA (thank you very much RSBTR) and it's about time I get started trying my hand at making a winter tarp.

I'm looking at the kit offered by RSBTR to determine what other components I need, and spotted 5' drawcord and 2 cordlocks. I didn't see them mentioned in the plans, did I miss something? Do I NEED them?

Also, looking at the online instructions, I think the ridgeline tie-out is 14" shorter than the bottom per side (per the Top Down View), when marking the material for cutting, is point 1 14" in from the edge (point 2), and the same for point 6 vs point 5? Or am I missing a seam allowance somewhere?

edit: lastly, which side is the outside? Does it matter if I use the shiny side inside or out?

    Thanks in advance

The drawcord and cordlocks are to make your own double ended stuff sack for the tarp. Don't feel bad about ordering extra components because the diy bug is addictive and you'll use them up in future projects as well.

I can't view the instructions while I'm at work so it's a little hard to know exactly what you're looking at with the second question, but I'm sure someone will chime in with your answer.

Best of luck in your build!

You'll actually measure in 15.5" at point 1. It's 175" in raw material, but after you cut the angled portions off the doors(step 2b),youll be left with 172".

The shiny side is the one coated in silicone, which I suspect is intended to be the outside.

Actually the shiny side is the pu4000 coated side, is the side to be treated with seam-grip, and is recommended to be put to the inside.

Looking to order some HyperD 300 for reinforcement triangles, approx how many HALF yards do I need? I've never really bought fabric before so I'm unfamiliar with sizes...

One half-yard (approx. 18" x 60") of 300D pack cloth is sufficient to make reinforcement patches for at least three tarps. I cut 9" squares from the 300D and then either cut a square in half to make two rectangles for the ridge line or cut a square on both diagonals to make four triangular patches for side tie-outs and/or door corners. HTH...
