    Hot Weather Tarp?

I live (and usually hike/camp) near Hotlanta GA. My tarps, while awesome for keeping the rain off, tend to be bake-ovens. I would love to find a tarp that provides shade/coolness in addition to dryness.

Does anyone know of a high-albedo option? I've thought of draping emergency blankets over my existing to increase it's reflectivity, but I'm not sure how sturdy/crinkly they would be.

Bonus points for it being lightweight.

    Best, Andy

Your emergency blanket is going to be one of your best bets as any other tarp that reflects sun light is going to be very heavy like the cheap blue tarps at Wally World that have a reflective side.

You could drape a space blanket or 2 over your existing tarp. One would probably be sufficient.

My idea of a hot weather tarp is one that is packed away on my gear closet. LOL

If no rain is expected, dual porch mode maximizes airflow. A small hammock ridgeline fan works wonders to cool you off.

I would think a light colored sil-poly in dual porch mode would be both coolest (compared to dark/ or patterned ones) and definately lighter than WW or canvas.

Yep. A tarp pitched high and wide and site selection to maximize air flow are your best bets for hot weather camping. Lighter colour fabrics are another. Shade cloth many be a third option if no rain is expected.

try it out, and see how it works?

I'm from the south and can relate. I use a Kelty Noah 12. Pitched with a continuous ridge line. I just unstake one side and flip it over till bed time or need cover. Depending on your setup placement with the sun on either side, a 1/2 porch mode or a steep wall setup on either side will provide shade. Doesn't help much mid day. Or you can do a high pitch with a porch mode on both sides like suggested.
