    Tarp dimensions opinions

I have a piece of fabric that will give me an approx 10 x 10.5' tarp
my hammock is about 9ft long

I thought the piece i had for the tarp was longer to make at least 11' long
I do have another piece where I can add up 2.5 ft to the length

if I'm going to go thru the hassles of adding the extra length I'll use the whole 2.5'

question is it bad to add a seam on a tarp vertically?

In general you'll want to keep a flat felled seam (your ridgeline seam) loaded perpendicular to the seam. It wouldn't be the complete end of the world, but if at all possible, I would say try to limit the number of seams on your project, which may mean acquiring some more fabric.

Or make your tarp 10.5' long by ~8' wide, and use the extra pieces to make doors or beaks. That way the load-bearing seam is still one long piece.

That said, lots of tarps have perpendicular ridgeline seams...the 10x11 models can be pitched either way, and I pitch the JRB 8x8 with the ridgeline seam perpendicular. Haven't had any issues with either of those models yet, and haven't heard of any tarps failing b/c of that.

Obviously it's not the stronger option, but it appears strong enough that you should have a worry. Just be sure to seal it really well b/c that seam will likely be right over your head!

If the larger fabric you have will give you 10.5' in length after edges are hemmed, maybe you could use the extra fabric to add doors or beaks to the ends.
The doors/beaks on the ends could be left separate from each other rather than sewed together (like a continued ridge line). That would give you more versatility when you pitch the tarp at different angles of steepness.
Also, you could roll & tie them out of the way when not needed.

If you run the ridgeline diagonally it will give you 14.5 ft.
