    Bury length on dogbones?

I am going to make some dogbones and wonder how long the bury should be on the fixed loops. In the past I have made them, it looks like, 5 or 6", same as on the fixed loops on whoopie slings. But I am wondering, since the locked Brummell is doing the work, does the bury need to be so long because I am not relying on the constrictor to hold? Shorter buries would allow shorter dog bones. Thanks.

Here's the tutorial I've followed before. I've replaced all the CL on my hammocks with these.

Depends on the rope you are splicing. There's a formula, something like 50 times the radius of the rope, but I'm a rule of thumb kinda person. For Zing-It I use a 2" taper and bury twice that (so, 4"), and for 7/64" or 1/8" I use a 3-4" taper and 8" bury. If I'm making dog bones THAT short, I make continuous loops instead.
    Thanks,

If you are doing each end of the dog bone with locked brummels, then it doesn't matter how short you do the bury. If you are just doing eye splices on each end, then it does matter because the constriction is doing the work.

I use a dogbone as a bottle holder and the bury is about 1.5". My dogbones that I use on my pack have a 4" bury. These are based on 2 factors.
    1. The space I have available for the bury.
    2. The weight the dogbone may hold?
This is not based on any direct knowledge of what is needed. It's just what I do.

My understanding is that a locked brummel doesn't do the work - the bury does. The standard rule for buries for locked brummels is 2 fids (a fid is 21 x the rope diameter). For 7/64 amsteel that gives a bury of 4.6".

I think you may find this interesting... from the makers of Amsteel.

    Bury length on dogbones?

    Phantom guessing again
Samson probably splices the strongest way and this will help prevent lawsuits.
For hammocking I think you can get by with shorter buries than Samson recommends, (using locked brummel)as long as you are not hanging over cliffs or in treetops.
I once made a continuous loop with a locked brummel only (with no bury at all). It passed the hand pull test--I pulled as hard as I could. I did not test it by hanging in hammock. I was too scared
