I was wondering what it will take to make my own gear. What kind of sewing string to use with different fabrics and where tonget the best quality materials and strings.

For hammocks industrial machines are unnecessary. A home sewing machine with guterman Mara thread is all that is needed.

Im wanting to do more than hammock stuff. I have a vynal project to do as well.

I bought an industrial sewing machine last year that I was going to use for making the sails on my sailboat. Decided against it because the place where I had planned to make them is not available now. I've never used it, the only thing I did was take it out of the box to look at it. It's a heavy duty rig with a walking foot. If you are interested, let me know.

Hi FancyShoes - This sewing machine can be gotten for very little money. If this is your first sewing machine then it should be a good investment for it will give you the opportunity to learn about sewing and sewing machines. From this you will learn what you like and don't like and then, if you get bit by the sewing bug, you will know better what you want in the next sewing machine should this machine not meet all of your needs.

I strongly recommend that you go to a good sewing store and try one out. Don't be afraid to try other machines and ask for help. If it is a good store the staff should teach you how to thread them and let you do some sewing, and show you all the plusses and minuses of each keeping within your budget. Thus shop around for a good store as well. No one seems to be as helpful as Sailrite but then, sadly they don't sell home sewing machines. These guys can really spoil you.
