Why it's important to check your trees.

This is why it is so important to check your trees before you hang. A woman was paralyzed when a tree fell on her. A gofundme account has been set up for her. There's a link at the bottom of the article.

This is always bad news and it seems to happen year after year. One has to be aware of their surroundings when hanging a hammock or putting up a tent when around trees.

Why it's important to check your trees.

Very sad news. That's a terrifying new thing to worry about. Doesn't sound like there was any indication the tree was rotten inside. That's a tough break. Quite the parent the to still be grateful that it wasn't her daughter even when her own life has been changed forever.

I would never hang from a birch tree - it's on my list of trees to never hang from. I don't know if it's the bronze birch borer attacking them or what, but birch trees tend to come down whole, in my experience. They have shallow roots.

    I sew things on youtube.
I don’t sew on commission, so please don’t ask. Thanks.

Pecan trees - my sister was climbing a pecan tree that looked perfectly healthy when the limb she was standing on (a very thick limb) broke. My sister froze and could not move. My mom had to climb the tree and bring her down with a rope. I think that was the last tree my sister ever climbed. The limb she was standing on looked healthy - full of leaves and new growth, but was totally rotted out inside.

Can this be prevented by giving the trees you're sizing up your hardest push to see if they push over before using them?

There is a lot of info on the net and in books about how to tell the health of a tree. Trust your gut as well.

Many hammockers never give it a thought. Whenever I see those hammock stacks or several people in one hammock I always hope they checked the trees they are hanging from.
I am guilty of it too from time to time.
There is a lot more too it than a strong hammock suspension as many think.
I feel for this woman and the others hurt or killed by falling trees.

In addition to visual inspection, I always knock on the trunk. If it sounds hollow, I move on.
