What is the cutoff for signups? I don't know my work schedule for the weekend until maybe Tuesday.
Weather is looking great, sub 40 at night. Threats of rain aren’t enough to worry about. Plenty of tarps available if needed.

Has anyone paddled around this area? Is it worth bringing a kayak down? Also, are there any hiking trails right out of camp? Thanks!!
We got the group site that has the little side trail down to the water, with water access. But you'd have to ask Ratdog (or maybe SS) what the area around is like for paddling.
I don't think there are any official trails (i.e. the Batona) that lead in/out of camp, but Hawkins isn't all that far from Batona camp by car. So there are trails in the area.
2 dumb questions --- for now anyway ----
1) What's the bug (specifically tick) situation like up there now that we've had a bit of a cold snap on some evenings? Do I need to retreat my stuff with Permethrin before I go (if I can go) if clothing and such has been washed 6 - 8 times?
2) Where exactly is Hawkins Bridge Campground? When I plug the name into Google maps it's in Wharton State Forest and there's a different campground name. Just trying to figure out some logistics and timing --- again, if it turns out I'm able to go.
I should have a better idea whether I'm attending by the end of the day tomorrow....
I've paddled the Wading River but started at Hawkins Bridge then went down to Bodine Camp (about 9 to 11 miles, as I recall). It was in March and cold as hell. We tipped our canoe and went into the river. Then it started snowing. I don't have fond memories of that trip.

I've never hiked around there - it is a good 8 miles to the Batona Trail, as I recall.

I'd think the bug situation is not an issue. We didn't see much a few weekends ago during the Loco Libre hang, and that was much warmer.
As for the location, thanks for reminding me. I'll post something up later - you're correct, if you put it into google maps or the like, you'll get a hit on the actual bridge, but not the campground. For a rough idea though, if you put the Carranza Memorial into google maps, that's right across the road from the entrance to Batona Campground. If you follow that road 4-5 miles further into the pine barrens, that's where Hawkins camp is. But I'll hunt up some GPS coordinates or the like and put them up later tonight.
