    Hello from Syracuse, NY

    Hello - newbie here (surprise!)

I'm all around new to hammocking, backpacking, etc. Camped w/ tents but that's about it.

Came here to learn more about hammocking. I have my first backpacking trip planned a month from now, so I'm just here to learn / check things out.

Anyways - so far it's been quite informative!

Maybe you can go to a local hang.
Click Forums, click outings and then Northeast. And or join one or more hammockers for your first trip.
Have you watched Shug's ten part video series about hammocks tarps insulation suspensions and whoooooo buddy, coffee?

Welcome to the forums. You may have to have some serious snow gear a month from now

Well we have been looking for some hiking loops that would support a 3-day / 2-night weekend trip. Somewhere in the 20 mile range, but also one that would support a shorter hike in case we run into problems... (I fully expect that something will come up given all the variables). We also have been focusing on areas that have lean-tos, so that we always have the option to setup inside the shelter.

Our top choice is a loop in the West Canada Lakes wilderness area in the Adirondacks, it's 22 miles, so a little bit longer but we could do a partial loop and then just come back if it's too much.
Second choice is a through hike on the FLT, we would need two cars to do this.
Third choice is a hike near Middle Settlement Lake by old forge / thendara. Originally this was our first choice, but after reading it sounds like there are a number of beaver dams and potential swampy conditions that may not be best for our first hike (though the information was quite old - 10 + years ago).

I've been through the middle settlement lake area 2x so far this year and the routes I took were fine . Some other two car options would be sections of the npt. McKeever to bear creek rd. A chunk of the cranberry 50 (which does have a lot of beaver dams to cross) but by this time of year may not be an issue it did make for a wet hike earlier in the season. Wanakeena loop back to wannakeena via the falls is a nice approx 20 mile loop of what I would call easy terrain that's a chunk of the cranberry 50. Welcome to the forum ! Be prepared for cold nights in oct. maybe into the teens.
