You win, Universe...I’ve got the DIY bug

It’s been 18 years since my 7th grade Home-Ec class. 18 years since that stupid assignment where we had to use a sewing machine to make a textbook cover with a pocket for a calculator on the front. It’s been 18 years since my teacher told me I had to redo said assignment when she pointed out that the pattern on the calculator pocket was upside-down. 18 years since my 7th grade punk self refused to redo it, saying I would just take the “F” on the assignment because it wasn’t like I would ever use a sewing machine again...

And here we are...18 years later...and I interrupted my wife’s viewing of The Walking Dead to ask if she could help me get the sewing machine set up because I desperately wanted to learn and practice my stitches before taking on my DIY hammock.

It may have taken 18 years, but you finally got me, Universe. I made one little stitch using that sewing machine, and I felt instant gratification. Message received. I now see the err of my ways.

Same. Hadn't touched a machine since grade 7 and have now made 2 hammocks, ridgeline organizers, tent peg bags and matching storage bags for all of my gear.

    Welcome to the madness...

I've never sewn a thing in my life and I feel like I am already getting the bug, too! I wish I had a picture of my father-inlaw's face when I asked my mother-in-law if I could borrow her sewing machine.

Now. If only I had a couple of extra days in the week!

I look at it this way: You're not a real Jedi until you make your own Lightsaber.

Problem was that the stuff they wanted us to make was if little interest to us.

Making camping gear is a whole other matter! Addictive!!

Welcome to the rabbit hole...you took the red pill neo.

ONE OF US. ONE OF US.

I love DIY. Always loved sewing too. Among other things I like, I now collect sewing machines. My house has three now, one close to 100 years old. I'm not making my hammock on that one, though. ;D

Oh man, same thing here. I feel ridiculous not knowing the first thing about using a sewing machine at age 50, but I decided to try and am loving it. Although in my case, it wasn't so much the Universe as it was some fantastic things I have seen on here and YouTube made by HF user jellyfish!

    Absolutely!
I was "allergic" to sewing machines for over 40 years until I started making custom sacks for various pieces of camping gear... and now it's all I want to do in my free time
(I don't get to, b/c there's so much else to do, but still...)

and dang, didn't RSBTR just have a sale and I bought a crapload more fabric that I won't be able to work on until after Oct 16, when a big deadline looms...
