    Need to lighten up

We have hammock camped twice now. Each time was 3 days on the trail. We were beat and very challenged. My pack was 28lbs and my husbands was 55lbs. To say the least we need to lighten up. I've done a weight inventory of our gear and my husband is carrying 8lbs for shelter (hammock, tarp, suspension bugnet, ground tarp, stakes.). Ugh! I want to get him something lighter. But I'm afraid of getting something he won't like. He prefers a traditional hammock not one like mine. Anyone have suggestions? How do you decide?

I'm curious what you might have as far as gear? My dream hammock with zipped in bugnet and 12' hanger tarp, with suspensions & stakes, is right around brand name UL single tent weights. I love my dream hammock raven! I got my tarp from underground quilts. I have 4 ground hog stakes and my hammock suspension is whoopie slings and marlin spike.

I know there's UL hammock options, but I totally feel spoiled in my set up! And for right around 2-2.5 lbs, I'll keep it.

What are you calling a 'traditional hammock'?

Thank you. When I say traditional, I mean gathered ends and hangs head to foot between the trees. (My 90 degree hammock hangs so my sides are between the trees)

    He has:
    ENO double nest 1.25
    Eno Atlas Straps 1.1 lbs
Chinook Tarp 12x9.6 silnylon 1.8 lbs. With diy silnylon doors
    Bug net. 1.7 lbs
    Ground tarp .75 lbs
    Stakes 12oz
    Snakeskins 3.2oz

Its too complicated. He needs something light and easy.

Get a DL from one of our cottage vendors. DH, Dutchware, SLD, WB are all excellent hammocks that LAY like the ENO double with slightly less fabric. the bug net is included and those 2 alone will remove alot of the 2.95 lbs. Dynemma straps from Dutch are light as heck. Winter Dream, Winter Palace, Cuban fiber are several options would remove that tarp weight. Titanium stakes.

Easy to do a piece at a time.
When the wife asks, I simply say "Shug made me do it".

DL="double layer" meaning the hammock body has 2 layers of fabric (making it stronger, and also allowing for a pad to be slipped between the layers if desired)
Depending on his weight, he may not need a DL

Nearly 2 lbs for a bug net!!? How about 7 ounces! https://dutchwaregear.com/bottom-entry-bugnet.html

I have a DIY winter 12 tarp from Ripstop by the Roll. Tarp, tieouts and aluminum stakes comes in at 24 oz. I think I spent less than $70 on everything for it. That would cut out a pound right there.
There are two kinds of people in this world. Those that can extrapolate from incomplete data.

It’s going to be reiterative and most likely endless process.

I would suggest you weigh everything, especially the big three items, and consider if you can replace them. I think you will get more bang to to the buck targeting your backpack and quilts first.

I’m planning a four day outing and here’s my list.
