Converting UQ to TQ?

I replaced my ENO Blaze UQ with a JacksRBetter Washington 4. I have a zero-degree synthetic mummy bag for a TQ in freezing weather. I am interested in lightening my load as the mummy bag weighs almost 5 pounds and does not compact very well. I also have 2 Costco down quilts that I have modified with foot boxes. Would it be possible to use the Blaze UQ as a top quilt, in connection with my 2 Costco TQ?

I have searched the forum, but cannot locate a thread on this topic. Has anyone had experience in converting an under quilt into a top quilt? I have blown my hammock budget with the acquisition of the Washington 4, and I am searching for a “make do” that will accommodate some cold temperatures.

My first guess would be that you would be best off to sell the old underquilt, and then put the funds toward a new TQ.

You could simply place the Eno UQ either over or under the Costco TQ's for extra warmth. You may need to fasten them together with snaps or sewn on ties to keep the Eno from sliding off as you sleep.

Has anyone had experience in converting an under quilt into a top quilt?

it's 80x48, you should be able to just cinch up the "foot" end, into an impromptu footbox and use it as a TQ without really doing anything else. you might sew some tabs, or kam snap on some snaps to make more of a footbox, but as long as it covers you, you should be fine

Thanks Tikker for that suggestion. I will probably try to cinch it closed first, and if that is not satisfactory, I'll experiment with the snaps. I still want to use the ENO Blaze as an under quilt in warmer hanging weather.

I have a MacGear quilt that is billed as convertible for UQ/TQ use. It is more UQ than anything. After I got a Loco Libre Saver Series UQ, I use the MacGear in 40* to 50* weather as Tikker suggests for a TQ with no issues. It's still my summer UQ because it's synthetic.
