How about gluing / soldering a short section of the smaller tube inside the larger as a stop / pin?
A picture is worth 1000 words - so, so I think that this might help.
The weak point is at that hole, with a through pin that goes through both - my thinking is that the inner pipe provides some additional structural integrity:Nesting.png
That said - much less "fiddle factor" if you can just reverse the segments, so that has an elegance to it.
You could also potentially reverse that idea - and glue a small ring of the larger tube outside of the inner one...
That said - you are putting all of the stresses that keep you hanging on that glue - so it had better be one durable bond.
Welding/brazing would have more confidence in my mind.

the right side of this illustration feels extremely viable. ima look at some parts at the lowes and see whats what in terms of pricing and fitment. wish me luck. i feel like brazing/welding rings would make the post weak around the weld. welds are often far stronger than the materials they're welded to/on. not too sure about brazing, but it seems similar enough that it'd cause the same weakening effects. plant to ask some guys about that too while im at the store. often no one here knows diddly about the section they work in, so thats always a fun time /:

Wow, I like that better, easier to work the bond. I'd worry about welding this crap steel so I suggested glue/solder. Maybe cut / drill three or four windows in the ring and weld inside the windows?

This site has an assortment of connectors for 3/4 and 1" EMT conduit. I think the one linked above should allow the stand to be broken down in several pieces to transport.
Solder is around 400-500° F, silver solder (brazing) would be stronger but is at least 1100-1200° F.
I will accept that my thinking lead to an even better idea. The holes/pins would weaken it possibly.
Adding a step is a great idea.
