Transport volume and to a lesser degree length are the two "issues" that I have with my current solution.
It works, and I do transport it... but it is difficult to fit gear and people for 3 due to the bulk of the hammock stands.
If I can nest the poles, and drop that bulk to 25-30% of the volume - it is worth an expense to me :-)

I don't think you would be dropping the bulk substantially by using a 1 5/8" fence pole (1.66" diameter). A 3/4" emt conduit (.922 diameter) broke into 3 pieces would be a similar bulk.
Are there epoxies that you would trust?
High (desert) and low (winter) temp ratings, strength, longevity, etc.
JB Weld, Gorilla Epoxy, etc.
There are quite a few metal to metal epoxies.

Currently I have (for 2 stands) 16 x 4' x ~1.75" poles in a bag. (4' pole segments that do not nest)
With telescoping, I could drop that to a packed volume of 8 x 2.3' x 1.66". (nested poles, one length packed inside another)
The savings of 20" of length, and drops me from ~2300 cubic inches to something closer to 600 cubic inches.
Thats a saving of 1700 cublic inches (~28 liters).
IF I'm doing my math correct (no guarantees on that) 1 stand broken down into 8 4' lengths using 3/4" EMT should net approximately 256 cu-in without nesting plus what little bit some connectors would take up. That would be 512 cu-in for 2 stands without the extra weight of the larger poles.
EDIT: At .46lbs per ft for 3/4 EMT should net you about 15lbs just on the poles per stand.

I'd not been considering the thinner profile of 3/4" EMT vs what I have. (0.93" diameter vs 1.73")
I get a volume closers to 660 cu-in (3/4" EMT is .93" in diameter)...
So - you are correct... dropping to 3/4" EMT does get the volume savings.
So far as load capabilities for that volume, it would be good to know where it's failure point would be.
The larger diameter of the telescopic one (smallest segment being 1" EMT) should be able to handle more load... but it could be overkill.
Cost wise - 3/4" EMT easily wins
I'm 220lbs and use 3/4" with almost no notable flex. I haven't really stress tested it but I did see (and I think there is a link in this thread) a video showing 3800# applied to a 2 or 3ft section before it buckled.
We camped with them all last week and my kids (14 and 17) bounced in and out of them all week with no failures.

My assumption was that it would be more than strong enough, but also somewhat compact to pack.
The three sizes that you propose should also work - and I may have played with them as well :-)
In contrast, daneaustin3 built his out of only 3/4" EMT - and has had good success with it.
Having used similar couplings for a canopy, my experience is that the couplings are stronger than the EMT pole - so no reason that approach shouldn't work also.
