WILL TWO LIGHT UQ'S MAKE ME AS WARM AS ONE HEAVY UQ?

I have a 40deg HG UQ and am planning to do more winter camping in VA/WV using my WO XLC 2-layer. Should I invest in a heavy 0-10deg UQ or would I accomplish the same objective for less money using my 40deg and a 30deg at the same time? Has anyone tried this? Thanks/John

If weight isn't an issue, stacking works well as long as you don't compress the down.

Many of us have stacked UQs. Peppy is right that weight and volume can be issues, but if you have the room and the time to adjust two complete suspensions, the warmth will be the same. I've stacked my 0° and 40° underquilts down to -15° F and been so warm I woke up sweating. When I switch to my 0° in late Fall or early Spring, my normal hiking partner often adds my 40° UQ to his 20° for extra warmth.

In my opinion it's hard enough to keep one UQ in place let alone two. It can be done but it's not an easy job adjusting two quilts and keeping them in place.

A "heavy" lower rated UQ may be lighter than your 2 mid temp UQ's. And it may also take up less space in your pack.

Yes it can be done but results are on an individual basis due to hanging(stacking) them both right.

If you're going to do a lot of Winter camping, it's probably better to get the UQ rated for the lowest temps expected with a few degree lower for good measure.
Enjoy and have fun with your family, before they have fun without you

I just hang over the fire pit and that seems to take care of it. I keed! I keed!

Stacking is a little tricky, but can work pretty well as long as everything is aligned correctly and so forth. I don't have down UQs (yet), and have successfully stacked a Snugpak UQ and Snugpak cocoon down to about 7deg F. It does take a little more fiddling to get things the right tension and so forth. Packing those 2 Snugpak items is pretty bulky also.

I’m sure you’re right about that. I’ve been challenged in getting one adjusted in my XLC while still taking advantage of the footbox! I’ve been experimenting with plastic clamps with limited success. Thanks for the help.

Thanks! I’m hoping this will be an interim fix until I save for a Wookie!
