Question / Idea: Could a "Fronkey" style winter sock work? Just a elastic opening at the bottom that would partially close.

It would work but there should be some venting

True. Zipper is a great option.

I'm happy you kept the draw string large opening. It makes it a lot easier to set up rather than having to feed my whoopie slings through two tapered ends. And the zippered opening makes it simple to get in and out of for my nighttime star gazing breaks.
I can't recommend enough on getting a winter sock. Last night, the temps got down in the low 20's, but with the sock, I was toasty with the Hammock Gear 20 degree Phoenix underquilt and 20 degree Burrow topquilt. I would have been comfortable without it, but the sock cut the breeze and captured the heat and once you get used to being in a cocoon, it was very nice.

I got my zippered winter sock back in December and have used it a couple of times.

I love it. It really makes it much easier to stay warm in 0-25 degree temps. So far I haven’t really had many issues with condensation. The zipper makes this just about perfect-easy in and easy out I put some glow in the dark zipper pulls so I could find my out at night Though........
